"I'm telling!"
Teaching Students to Tell Folktales

(3 credit hours for teachers)

Norm Brecke leads this workshop on how to bring storytelling to your
students.
Saturday, January 30, 2010, 9 a.m. to 12 noon
Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle
$25 SSG members, $35 nonmembers

You will learn about
Why it is valuable to teach children to tell folktales.
Telling a story to your class.
Techniques to add variety in presentation (pace, movement).
The lesson sequence to culminate in student performances.
  Memorization (or rather, non-memorization) techniques.
  Storytelling games.
  Peer coaching.
  Putting on a one-night festival.

The workshop will be taught by teacher and storyteller Norm Brecke, who
teaches storytelling to third through fifth graders. However, information
for teaching older and younger students will be included as well. (Norm
teaches kindergarten and has taught high school and middle school in the
past.)

Although this workshop will encourage putting your own "spice" into a
folktale and learning the logical sequence of a good story, it is not about
writing original stories.

Teachers can receive 3 credit hours of continuing education for attending this workshop.
